Just Married? Financial Chores to Complete when You Tie the Knot

June 23, 2021 by Reynolds & Rowella Leave a Comment

Wedding season typically peaks in late summer and early fall, according to wedding website TheKnot.com. This year, that peak may be even more noticeable due to pent-up demand for wedding festivities caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.

HERE”S SOME USEFUL FINANCIAL ADVICE FOR COUPLES WHO TIE THE KNOT IN 2021

How Much Does It Cost to Tie the Knot?

The average cost of a wedding —excluding the engagement ring and honeymoon — was about $19,000 in 2020, down significantly from the average of $28,000 in 2019, according to The Real Weddings Study 2020 [COVID-19 Edition]. The pandemic has temporarily reduced the average cost, largely because the average number of guests fell dramatically last year.

The drop in average wedding cost seems to be only temporary, according to the survey. The average cost for a wedding reception in 2021 is expected to be roughly $22,500.

Costs vary significantly by geographic location, however. The most expensive state to get married is New Jersey, where couples spend an average of $53,400 for a wedding and reception. The least expensive state is Utah, where the average cost is only $19,700.

Housekeeping Chores

Whether you’re planning a wedding celebration now or later, it’s important to remember the administrative tasks to address when you say, “I do.” Many of these tasks relate to name changes. Some people choose to take on their spouse’s last name or use a hyphenated (or blended) version of both last names.

The tradition of changing names is becoming less common. Many newlyweds, including some same-sex married couples and people over 35 with established careers, are sticking with their original surnames.

If you do decide to change your name, here’s the protocol after you’re legally wed:

Visit Your Local SSA Office. Notify the Social Security Administration (SSA) after you’re married to protect Social Security benefits and credit ratings. To get a new Social Security card, you need to complete an application (available online) and provide proof of identification with your old and new names, such as a driver’s license and a marriage certificate. If you were born outside the United States, you’ll also need proof that you’re a citizen or legally in the country.

Update IRS Records. The SSA informs the IRS about name changes, and the tax agency’s records are generally updated 10 days later. If you don’t notify the SSA and file a tax return with your new married name, IRS computers won’t be able to match the new name with the Social Security number.

Spread the Word. Once your name is officially changed with the SSA, newlyweds need to share the good news with everyone else. In addition to filling out the proper forms with your employer’s human resource department, here are some other records to update to avoid confusion:

  • Driver’s license,
  • Passport,
  • State and local tax records,
  • Voter registration,
  • Vehicle registration,
  • Property titles,
  • Utility records, such as phone, cell phone, electric, gas, water and trash removal,
  • Bank, credit card and brokerage accounts,
  • Pension and retirement plans,
  • Insurance policies and beneficiaries,
  • Medical, dental and pharmacy records, and
  • Email addresses and social media accounts.

When you return to work after the honeymoon, consult your company’s human resource department to evaluate how your change in marital status affects your benefits options. You might save money by eliminating duplicate health care or life insurance coverage, for example. And don’t forget to change beneficiary designations on retirement plans and insurance policies.

Combining Your Finances

Financial matters are a leading cause of conflict for married couples, especially when you’re trying to blend two established households into one. So, it’s important to consult a R+R tax advisors to get a handle on your financial, tax and estate planning strategies as a joint household.

Newlyweds need to candidly discuss such issues as how much savings and debt each partner brings to the table. Each partner’s credit rating should be disclosed to identify potential problems early in the relationship.

You’ll also need to decide whether to combine your savings, checking and credit card accounts. Even if you decide to maintain separate accounts, it’s often helpful to have at least one joint account to pay for shared expenses, such as the costs of a mortgage or car, rent, household expenses and childcare.

A joint account can also help avoid trouble in case one spouse dies. When a spouse or common law partner dies and there are separate accounts, the survivor will be excluded from the other separate account if the estate goes into probate.

In addition, R+R often help newlyweds establish joint financial goals, including annual budgets and contingency plans in case a spouse gets laid off or becomes disabled. Once your short-term goals are set, look to the future: What age do you expect to retire? Where would you like to live when you retire? What activities — such as hobbies, travel, part-time work and volunteerism — do you envision participating in during your golden years? Are your current retirement account savings and contributions sufficient to achieve those goals?

Don’t let administrative chores prevent you from living happily ever after. R+R tax advisors are here to help address critical housekeeping chores head-on – Contact us today.

Tax-Smart Gifting

October 27, 2020 by Reynolds & Rowella Leave a Comment

By: Eric Miller

As with every election year, there is a great deal of uncertainty of what to expect. Taxes are always a popular topic amongst the candidates regardless of the year, and that trend has continued for the 2020 election. When discussing taxes the popular area that is addressed are Income Taxes and an area that can sometimes be overlooked can be the Gift and Estate Tax.

The 2018 tax reform brought with it significant changes to the Gift and Estate Tax, increasing the federal exemptions from 5.49 million to 11.18 million. When this happened, many taxpayers believed they no longer needed to worry about any sort of major gifting or estate planning as their estate was under 11 million, or 22 million if married.  However, a change in the presidency or a shift in control in the House or Senate could change these rules. With the possibility that these exemptions could decrease to 2012 levels or even pre-2012 levels means that taxpayer’s need to evaluate their current financial position, future plans, and prepare for the future to not miss out on being able to protect large amounts of their hard earned wealth from estate taxes.

If Trump is re-elected or the Republicans maintain control, there is the possibilities that the current rules are kept in place through 2025, as originally set under the 2018 reform. There is even the possibility of making the current exemptions permanent and not subject to sunset in 2025.  If no action is taken, the exemptions are set to decrease to pre-2018 levels of 5 million.

If Biden is elected or if the Democrats gain control, the rumored changes to the current exemptions could be drastic.  Not only is there a chance that the exemption amount could drop to the 2012 exemption amount of 5 million, there is a chance it could go to the 2009 amount of 3.5 million. The fact that the exemption amounts could decrease so much is scary enough on its own but the potential changes do not stop there. There is also the possibility that the stepped-up basis may be removed, meaning that the taxpayer’s original cost basis will be passed to the beneficiaries of an estate even after estate taxes have been paid on the fair market value of the asset. For many assets, this can lead to massive amounts of taxes paid for both estate taxes and future income taxes by the beneficiaries.  And if that weren’t enough, the tax rate could be changed. The current Estate and Gift Tax rate is 40%.  This was 45% in 2009 and has been as high as 55%.

Additionally, some of the more popular estate planning vehicles, such as Grantor Retained Annuity Trusts (GRATs), Generation Skipping Trusts, and Grantor trusts might be targeted and changed. A very popular technique that has been used is to make a gift of an asset to a Grantor trust that removes the asset from the taxpayer’s estate but requires the taxpayer to then continue reporting the income generated by the trust on their personally filed income tax return. Doing this allows for the Grantor trust to not have to use any of its own assets to pay income taxes as the taxpayer pays it on behalf of the trust and does not need to incur any additional gift tax. This helps the trust to continue growing, not needing to spend any of its own earnings on taxes, while it further helps to reduce the estate of the taxpayer.

Another important item to note is that if there is a change in the gift tax exemption, gifts are made from a bottom up approach, not a top down. What this means is that if a taxpayer makes a gift of $4 million in 2020 when the exemption is $11 million, there will be $7 million of gift and estate exemption remaining.  If in 2021 the exemption is reduced to $5 million, the taxpayer will still have used up $4 million of their exemption while only have $1 million remaining.

One item that will need to be considered and planned for if making large gifts will be the state of residency.  Connecticut for example has its own separate gift tax.  While this amount has been increasing each year since 2018, up from $2 million, the 2020 exemption is only at $5.1 million.  This means that any federal gift in excess of $5.1 million, assuming no exemption has been used, will be subject to Connecticut gift taxes.  Connecticut also has its own set of unique rules when calculating its gift tax as if any exemption has been used already, it is not a dollar for dollar increase.  A calculation will need to be done to see how much Connecticut gift tax is still available.

While New York does not have its own gift tax like Connecticut, it does present its own items to consider when making gifts.  New York has a “claw back” period of three years.  This means that any gifts made within three years of the date of death are brought back into the taxpayer’s estate for New York purposes.

It is very unlikely that any sort of change, if they were to occur, would happen right away in 2021.  Even with that thought, one should not gain a potential false sense of security that any gifts done before any changes are made are safe.  There can always be the possibility that a change can be made retroactively.  This would mean even though a change occurred in July of 2021, gifts made in January 2021 when the then old rules are still in place, could now be subject to the new rules.

While the above items are not guaranteed, the possible changes that could occur are drastic enough that taxpayer’s should be considering all of their options. While taxpayer’s can wait to see how the election plays out and will have until December 31 to execute any plans, the planning can start now.  What is your overall goal?  Do you want to make sure you have just enough and leave everything to the next generation?  What assets do you have available to use?  Depending on the answers to these sorts of questions, the manner of gifting will be different, as well as seeing whether or not it is worth doing this gifting.  Everyone’s situation is a little different, and as such everyone needs to look at their own estate and plan differently.

Additionally, your accountant and attorney will greatly appreciate discussing these items while there is more time to determine the best course of action.

Collene Torres of Reynolds + Rowella joins over 300 swimmers for Swim Across America

June 25, 2019 by Reynolds & Rowella Leave a Comment

Collene Torres of Team Wave Riders joined more than 300 swimmers and volunteers in the 13th annual Swim Across America Fairfield County on June 22, 2019.   Team Wave Riders raised more than $8,500 for this event!  Collene says the team is already talking about expanding and have set their goal for 2020 at $20,020!

Swim Across America is the inspired sequel to a triumphant Run Across America completed by the two founders of SAA, Jeff Keith and Matt Vossler in 1985. The eight-month journey spanned the country from Boston to Los Angeles and raised over $1 million for cancer research. Jeff Keith, one of the determined runners, a 22-year-old from Fairfield, CT, had lost his right leg to cancer a decade before. Following college graduation, these two childhood buddies embarked on their mission, making history in the process. Together, they instilled hope in all who fight this disease and heightened consciousness about overcoming this frightening diagnosis.

It was in 1987 that Keith and Vossler decided to bring their cause back home and transitioned from running to swimming for a cure. With a focus on raising money and awareness for cancer research, prevention and treatment, Swim Across America was chartered as a 501c3 nonprofit organization.

Since 1987, SAA has granted over $80 million through 20 experiential open water swimming fundraising events and over 100 pool swim fundraisers.

How Does the Dark Web Impact Small Businesses?

June 17, 2019 by Reynolds & Rowella Leave a Comment

Identity theft is an unfortunate occurrence that is all too familiar with most business owners, but do those individuals know where the compromised data will end up? Often, these business owners are unaware of the virtual marketplace where stolen data is purchased and sold by cybercriminals; a place known as the “Dark Web”.  It’s important to understand what information is available for purchase there and how it impacts small businesses.

What is the Dark Web?

The Dark Web, which is not accessible through traditional search engines is often associated with a place used for illegal criminal activity. While cybercriminals tend to use the Dark Web as a place to buy and sell stolen information, there are also sites within it that do not engage in criminal activity. For many, the most appealing aspect of the Dark Web is its anonymity.

What is for sale on the Dark Web?

Information sold on the Dark Web varies, and includes items such as stolen credit cards, stolen account information from financial institutions, forged real-estate documents, stolen credentials and compromised medical records. Even more alarming, the Dark Web contains subcategories allowing a criminal to search for a specific brand of credit card as well a specific location associated with that card. Not only can these criminals find individual stolen items on the Dark Web, but in some cases, entire “wallets” of compromised information are available for purchase, containing items such as a driver’s license, social security number, birth certificate and credit card information.

What is stolen personal information used for?

When stolen information is obtained by criminals, it can be used for countless activities like securing credit, mortgages, loans and tax refunds. It is also possible that a criminal could create a “synthetic identity” using stolen information and combining it with fictitious information, thus creating a new, difficult to discover identity.

Why are stolen credentials so valuable?

Stolen user names and passwords are becoming increasing popular among cybercriminals, but why? Identity thieves will often hire “account checkers” who take stolen credentials and attempt to break into various accounts across the web using those user names and passwords. The idea here is that many individuals have poor password practices and are using the same user name and password across various accounts, including business account such as banking and eCommerce. If the “account checker” is successful, the identity thief suddenly has access to multiple accounts, in some cases allowing them the opportunity to open additional accounts across financial and business-horizons.

Why should small businesses be concerned about the Dark Web?

Since the Dark Web is a marketplace for stolen data, most personal information stolen from small businesses will end up there, creating major cause for concern. With the media so often publicizing large- scale corporate data breaches, small businesses often think they are not a target for cybercriminals, however that is not the case. Cybercriminals are far less concerned about the size of a business than they are with how vulnerable their target is. Small businesses often lack resources to effectively mitigate the risks of a cyberattack, making them a prime target for identity theft as well as other cybercrime.

At a recent Federal Trade Commission (FTC) conference, privacy specialists noted that information available for purchase on the Dark Web was up to twenty times more likely to come from a company who suffered a data breach that was not reported to the media. The FTC also announced at the conference that the majority of breaches investigated by the U.S. Secret Service involved small businesses rather than large corporations.

How can you reduce the risk for your small business?

To reduce the risks of a cybercriminal gaining access to your company’s information/network, you must ensure you have proper security measures in place.

In addition, it is crucial that your employees are properly trained on security, including appropriate password practices.

Reynolds + Rowella Volunteers at The Catherine Violet Hubbard Animal Sanctuary

August 15, 2018 by Reynolds & Rowella Leave a Comment

More than 45 partners and staff of Reynolds + Rowella, a consulting, audit and accounting firm, spent their second year in a row at the 34-acre Catherine Violet Hubbard Animal Sanctuary in Newtown, CT, for their Annual Day of Caring on June 21, 2018.

Jenny Hubbard, President of the CVH Foundation said, “we are always left in awe with the kindness and generosity shared by Reynolds + Rowella. Over the course of one day, the sanctuary landscape was transformed and phase one of our community gardens project was completed – especially fitting as this was the very team who installed the inaugural garden bed almost a year ago. More than anything, the laughter, smiles and support that filled the sanctuary offered a reminder of the hope and healing that abounds. We are grateful that Reynolds + Rowella would continue to walk with us on the very special journey.”

Reynolds + Rowella started the Day of Caring in 2010 and has continued it every year since with different organizations, including: Green Chimneys in Brewster, NY, Woodcock Nature Center in Wilton, CT and The Dorothy Day Hospitality House in Danbury, CT.
